While certain people foods (like a small amount of cooked tuna or eggs) are typically safe for cats, others are off-limits. Keep your feline companion safe by making sure the following foods are always out of reach:
- Raw Fish: Sushi-grade raw fish may be safe for people, but it’s definitely dangerous for cats. When ingested, raw fish can cause gastrointestinal upset. When consumed on a regular basis, raw fish can trigger thiamine deficiency in cats, which can lead to neurological problems and convulsions.
- Milk: Despite the common misconception that milk is the perfect treat for cats, adult felines do not typically digest milk well. This can lead to diarrhea and other symptoms of stomach upset.
- Onions: Cats are nearly two times more susceptible to the toxic compounds found in onions than dogs are. Even a small amount of onion can cause red blood cell damage because cats do not properly metabolize these components.
