NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. – A family’s three-legged dog was shot to death when a group of men tried to break into a home on Long Island. The group four to five would-be burglars attempted to break into the familys home on Montauk Highway near Doane Avenue in North Bellport Thursday afternoon just after 3pm, but were confronted by four adults inside the home at the time, according to Suffolk County police.
The residents tried to push the door back against the burglars, but were sprayed in the face with an unknown chemical substance, authorities said.
As the victims managed to start closing the door, the family dog, an 11-year-old three-legged pit bull named Sarah, raced out, police said. The suspects shot the dog with a small caliber handgun and ran away empty handed. The family’s dog, died from her wound.
Nothing was taken and all of the attackers had their faces partially covered. There have been no arrests. Fifth Squad detectives are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information on this crime, please contact Suffolk County Police.
